A golden opportunity has arisen for local nurses after the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia sent out a call to Kenyan nurses and mid-wives who wish to work there to apply through an online portal, National Employment Authority.
The vacancies were announced on Tuesday by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, inviting qualified Kenyan nurses and midwives to work in the Middle East powerhouse.
"This is a collaboration between the two countries which will enhance safe and productive labour migration while providing opportunities for Kenyans to work in various sectors in Saudi Arabia. " said State Department for Labour and Skills Development Principal Secretary Geoffrey Kaituko in a statement.
The contracts will be for one year but renewable annually with a minimum salary of shs.176000 which is roughly 4700 Saudi Riyals.
According to the PS; individuals interested must meet the following conditions:
Be a Kenyan citizen.
Be a licensed member of the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Be in good standing.
Possess a valid police clearance certificate.
Hold a Bachelors degree in Nursing Sciences or Midwifery
Have a minimum of two years experience working in a hospital
Some of the benefits and conditions of the contract are listed below:
Nurses will be working for 48 hours a week.
Round trip air ticket for a year.
Paid up vacation for 35 days a year.
Meals, housing, insurance, transportation, medical and uniform will be provided by Ministry of Health of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
“The Government of Kenya is collaborating with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) in enhancing safe, regular, and productive labour migration between the two countries. This initiative has facilitated employment of thousands of Kenyans in various economic sectors in the KSA which has expressed willingness to recruit additional healthcare workers from Kenya,” further adds the statement.
This follows a recent visit by the Labour Cabinet Secretary Florence Bore to Saudi Arabia.
In the past, Kenya has had bilateral agreements with various countries regarding health workforce collaboration, the United Kingdom being one of them.
In 2021, retired President Uhuru Kenyatta signed a bilateral deal with the UK to employ over 20,000 nurses in a span of three years. The first batch left the country a year ago. More are yet to leave.
Given the high unemployment rate within the country, this news provides a silver lining for healthcare professionals. It is believed around 30000 nurses are currently remain unemployed in the country. Moreover, some of the employed nurses frown on their remuneration and benefits believing they deserve better.
Mr. Ajwang, the current President of National Nurses Association of Kenya has indicated that the news is indeed positive but however lamented of the fact the government of the day did not involve them in the talks.
